Many people have the desire to maintain a healthier lifestyle through diet, but they feel that the change in the grocery list will empty out their pockets. This is simply not true. You can buy fruits and vegetables without breaking your pockets. The U.S. Department of Labor has devised four ways to eat three servings of fruit and four servings of vegetables per day for less than $4.00, based on a chained grocery store in downtown Chicago. Use these combinations to get your daily dose of green:
Option 1 ¾ cup frozen apple juice: 55 cents ¾ cup frozen orange juice: 88 cents ¼ cup fresh bananas: 9 cents ¼ cup fresh cantaloupe: 27 cents ½ cup fresh radishes: 52 cents ½ cup fresh carrots: 25 cents ½ cup canned green peas: 24 cents I cup fresh mustard greens: 50 cents Total: $3.30
Option 2 ½ cup fresh watermelon: 12 cents ½ cup fresh apples: 38: cents 3/8 cup frozen orange juice: 44 cents 1/8 cup raisins: 17 cents ½ cup fresh carrots: 25 cents ½ cup fresh broccoli: 31 cents ½ cup fresh potatoes: 13 cents ½ cup fresh cucumbers Total: $2.31
Option 3 ½ cup fresh apricots: 87 cents ¾ cup frozen orange juice: 88 cents ¼ cup fresh grapefruit: 12 cents ¼ cup fresh apples: 19 cents ½ cup fresh cucumbers: 51 cents ½ cup fresh sweet potatoes: 13 cents ½ cup fresh broccoli: 31 cents Total: 3.14
