(BlackDoctor.org) -- When I was born, I had breathing difficulties. What a rough start! Sadly, it was but a prelude to the rough times to come. After being fed oatmeal and having subsequent breathing difficulties each time, I was diagnosed with asthma.
Unfortunately, this is a diagnosis that many parents will eventually hear. When diagnosing asthma in a child, the doctor looks at several things:
(BlackDoctor.org) -- Researchers have found that asthmatics who live in the inner city tend to use their inhalers less and have worse symptoms, but why? Is it because these patients rely too much on unproven herbal remedies? Or are they turning to alternative treatments because they aren’t getting enough relief from their medications?
These questions certainly pose a paradox, but the research suggests that doctors treating asthma patients should ask about their patients’ use
(BlackDoctor.org) -- African Americans are three times more likely to die from asthma than Caucasian Americans. And while the prevalence of asthma is on the rise across the country, the rate is consistently higher in Blacks, forcing one to wonder why this controllable disease has had such an impact on one population.
Are these statistics the result of poor environmental conditions? Poor medical care? Or genetics?
(BlackDoctor.org) -- Along with all the problems caused by asthma, having sinusitis -- or sinus infections -- can be tough to handle. It can make you feel sick and miserable. Without good treatment, it can last for months or even years. What's worse, one condition can worsen the other. Sinusitis has been associated with more severe cases of asthma. So not only does having asthma increase the odds of getting a sinus infection, but a sinus infection can make your asthma harder to control.
